Mamata captures WB, Jaya bags TN, Kerala swings to UDF

first_imgMamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress-led alliance on Friday made history by routing the Left Front in West Bengal while J. Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK pushed the DMK out of power in Tamil Nadu. (Full coverage of Assembly Polls)In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) scored a narrow win over the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF).  The Congress also headed for a spectacular third term in Assam. But in Puducherry, the party’s alliance with the DMK lost power to the AINRC-AIADMK combine. West Bengal (294 seats)The Trinamool Congress-Congress alliance got 226 seats. The Left Front, which ruled the state for 34 years, is way behind at 61 seats.Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee accepted defeat and resigned. The Left Front was planning to hold a meeting within a week to discuss the reasons for its defeat.Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee hailed the win as the “victory of innocent people over years of injustice”. “With this historic win, the people of Bengal have been liberated. The Trinamool (government) will bring democracy to Bengal,” Mamata told a swarm of supporters outside her Kolkata home.”It’s a mandate the people of Bengal had been waiting for. It has come after a long struggle,” she said.Mamata invited her allies Congress and the SUCI to join the state government. The Trinamool wave didn’t spare even the Left Front stalwarts. Among the prominent losers were Buddhadeb from Jadavpur and Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta from Khardaha.Tamil Nadu (234 seats)Tamil Nadu gave an overwhelming mandate to the AIADMK combine, which won 204 seats as against the DMK’s 30.advertisement”I convey my profound gratitude to the people for giving us a decisive mandate,” Jayalalithaa said.Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief M. Karunanidhi accepted defeat and resigned even as the AIADMK hinted that it had no intention of sharing power with its allies.AIADMK leader M. Thambidurai said the party would get full majority and “there is no point in forming a coalition government”.”The people have voted to root out the DMK’s corrupt government. It is the duty of my leader to take the necessary action and go through all these cases,” Thambidurai said. The AIADMK wave swept all the regions of the state. Spiralling prices, power cuts and corruption, especially the 2G spectrum scam, appeared to have cost Karunanidhi’s party the most. The run-up to the elections had seen no visible anti-incumbency wave and pre-poll surveys had predicted a close fight between the two major Dravidian parties. Kerala (140 seats)The UDF managed to wrest power from the CPI(M)-led LDF with a majority of just two seats. The UDF won 72 seats to get a simple majority as against the LDF’s 68.Although the LDF lost, the CPI(M) emerged as the single largest party with 45 seats while Congress got 38 seats. The Indian Union Muslim League and Kerala Congress (Mani), which command a good following in the Muslim and Christian dominated areas, contributed significantly to the UDF’s victory. The prominent UDF winners were its chief ministerial probable Oommen Chandy, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, IUML leader P.K. Kunhalikutty and Kerala Congress leader K.M. Mani. For the LDF, CPI(M) veteran V.S. Achuthanandan scored a hat-trick of wins from Malampuzha. While most of his cabinet colleagues won, Devaswom Minister Ramahandran Kadnapally, Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran and Youth Affairs Minister V. Surendran Pillai lost.Assam (126 seats)The ruling Congress got 78 seats. The AGP got 10 seats and others 38.Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi won from Titabor constituency and almost all his ministers, barring Culture and Sports Minister Bharat Narah, romped home with comfortable margins. “We won because of our welfare measures and we will continue our development work,” Gogoi said.Puducherry (30 seats)Ousting the Congress, the AINRC-AIADMK combine secured a majority by winning 20 seats. The AINRC won 15 seats and the AIADMK 5.The Congress-DMK won only nine seats. The Congress won seven of the 17 seats it contested and DMK two of the 10 it fought. Hookah as toxic to lungs as cigarettes

first_imgHere is one more reason to crackdown on those hookah bars in the capital. Scientists have found that smoking a hookah or water pipe damages your lungs in the same way as a cigarette does, rubbishing popular notion that hookah smoking is somewhat safer. A new study published in scientific journal Respirology has shown that water pipe or hookah smoking affects lung function and respiratory symptoms as much as cigarette smoking. The study, done by Iranian scientists found increased prevalence and severity of respiratory symptoms among hookah and cigarette smokers. The effect among hookah smokers on their respiratory system was similar to those who indulged in deep inhalation cigarette smoking, said Mohammad Hossein Boskabady of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, who led the study.Study participants were tested for signs of respiratory health like wheezing, chest tightness and coughing.Tobacco smoking using hookah or hubble-bubble is a traditional way of smoking prevalent in many parts of North India, and has now caught on among urban youth as well due to aggressive promotion of hookah bars.Companies in hookah bar business claim that hookah is not same as smoking cigarettes, while some even claim hookah is tobacco-free. This is far from truth, scientists say.Smokers usually consume 10 to 20 grams of tobacco when smoking a hookah and the duration of smoking is 40 to 50 minutes on an average. The nicotine content of hookah tobacco is greater than that of cigarettes, while carbon monoxide levels are three times greater than in cigarette smoke. Most users believe hookah is less harmful than cigarettes as water pipe filters out toxic components of tobacco. “Filtering out toxic chemicals by water is a myth”, pointed out Dr Prakash C. Gupta, Director, Healis Sekhsaria Institute for Public Health.advertisement”There are very few toxic chemicals that dissolve in water. This means concentration of more toxic chemicals increases further in hookah smoke. For instance, tobacco smoke contains carbon dioxide as well as carbon monoxide.Carbon dioxide dissolves in water but carbon monoxide which is far more toxic, does not.  So hookah smoke contains greater concentration of carbon monoxide than cigarette smoke”, Dr Gupta said.In fact, he said, instances of carbon monoxide poisoning due to hookah smoke have also been reported.Dr Monika Arora of Public Health Foundation of India(PHFI) said the study confirms ill-effects of hookah smoking. “It should also lead to strong regulation of hookah bars. Already Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat have banned hookah parlours”, she pointed out.last_img read more

India Today Mind Rocks Youth Summit: Arvind Kejriwal, the man who brought youth to the forefront

first_imgTwo years ago, it was believed that the Indian youth’s political idealism is restricted to watching Rang De Basanti and their patriotism to chest-thumping during cricket matches between India and Pakistan.Today, young Indians are shaping the political agenda of the nation. Their level of political awareness is such that mainstream political parties which ignore this section run the risk of being decimated at the hustings.Much of the credit for transforming the youth from perennial backbenchers to the vanguard of politics should go to Arvind Kejriwal, the man who helped spark the mass upsurges at Jantar Mantar and Ramlila Maidan the past year.Anna Hazare might have been the face of the Jan Lokpal agitation, but Kejriwal was undoubtedly the brain behind it. The central position that the Magsaysay awardee occupies in the movement has only become more apparent now that it is in a phase of transition. He will be speaking at the India Today Mind Rocks Youth Summit 2012 on Friday. It is inexplicable why mainstream political parties ignored the youth as a ” vote bank” in a country where over half the people are below 30 years of age. It is this section that Kejriwal and his team tapped into. However, their contribution lies not so much in the manner in which they caught the imagination of young Indians but for mobilising them under a platform which had nothing to do with the politics of caste, religion and region.Critics have tended to present Kejriwal and his team as a bunch of event managers who somehow managed to gather a crowd. This is both inaccurate and unfair. Kejriwal’s efforts at mobilising the youth predate the Jan Lokpal agitation by over a decade. Since the early 2000s, Kejriwal, through his NGO Parivartan, has been going to various schools in Delhi to advocate for transparent governance. People still recall that it was by attending his presentations during their school days which made them realise that they paid taxes even by purchasing a bar of chocolate.Having now turned the movement against corruption into a political one, the challenges have only increased for Kejriwal.Whether Kejriwal’s political does well in the elections is besides the point. He and his team have brought corruption, which people had almost become accustomed to, into the centre of the political discourse. This will remain their lasting contribution.advertisementlast_img read more
