EPA finds E coli , coliform in airplane water tests

first_img EPA announcement [News release] Flights in Virginia, Georgia, Texa, and California were tested in August and September. Repeat tests on 11 aircraft indicated eight planes still didn’t meet EPA’s water-quality standards. Sep 27, 2004 (CIDRAP News) – More than 12% of passenger aircraft contained Escherichia coli or coliform bacteria in a recent round of testing, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found. The Air Transport Association (ATA) said that about 90% of member aircraft could be traveling internationally and loading water from sources not subject to EPA standards. Drinking water aboard 158 randomly selected passenger planes was tested. While 87.4% of the planes met EPA drinking-water quality standards, 12.6% did not. Initial testing showed 20 planes had positive results for total coliform bacteria; two of them also tested positive for E coli. Both of those contaminants are indicators that the water could contain other disease-causing organisms. See alsocenter_img EPA had begun a review of rules and guidelines in 2002 but is speeding up the process in light of the aircraft test results, the agency announced. The agency is placing specific emphasis on preventive measures, adequate monitoring, and sound maintenance practices such as flushing and disinfection of aircraft water systems. EPA and ATA are collaborating to reach agreement on how airlines will bring drinking water up to acceptable standards, a news release said, but added that if they cannot agree, EPA will exercise its enforcement authorities. Passengers with compromised immune systems may want to request canned or bottled beverages, EPA suggested in a Sep 20 news release. Lakers’ Nick Young nursing frustrations with injury, ESPN anchor making fun of Iggy Azalea

first_imgYoung answered Flores on Twitter: “I’m pretty sure we’re going to run into each other soon. (Your) job is to talk about sports, not what me and my chick got going on. Young joked on Tuesday, “I might pour some water or Gatorade on him like we won the championship.”Flores provided more punchlines. “If you look at his numbers, there is a 70 percent chance that if he takes a shot at me, he’s going to miss,” Flores said on ESPN Radio.“What time does he come on TV?” Young retorted. “He probably said it because he needed to get some ratings. It came on at like 12 in the morning.”As for his injury, Young told the Los Angeles News Group he will return when the Lakers host Dallas on Sunday at Staples Center. Both Lakers coach Byron Scott and Young reported he has not advanced to running drills because of continued swelling. Coaching carouselScott expressed sympathy for Brian Shaw’s firing on Tuesday after compiling a 56-85 record through 1 1/2 seasons with the Nuggets. “The biggest challenge is to get ownership and management to understand that it takes time,” said Scott, who has been fired from New Jersey, New Orleans and Cleveland. “You have to get the type of guys in there that fit your system. It doesn’t happen in a year, year and a half.”Shaw played for the Lakers (1999-2003) and served as a Lakers assistant (2005-2011). Meanwhile, former Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni could become a candidate for Denver’s coaching vacancy. “I don’t think he’s aggressively looking,” said Hornets coach Steve Clifford, who was one of D’Antoni’s assistants with the Lakers in 2012-13. “If the right situation came up, he would definitely coach.” Seeking approvalThe Lakers will apply for a hardship exception after Ronnie Price missed the past four games because of a season-ending right elbow injury. If granted, the Lakers could add a 16th player to their roster, either from the Development League or through free agency. But they are unlikely to add any players, according to an NBA source. Charlotte, N.C. >> What he hoped would become a romantic February has morphed into a tumultuous month.Nick Young’s frustrations went beyond sitting out of the Lakers’ 104-103 loss on Tuesday against the Charlotte Hornets at Time Warner Cable Arena, his fourth consecutive contest missed because of a swollen left knee. Or Young’s 9.9 points per game average on 32.4 percent shooting through nine games in February. The Lakers’ forward also disliked ESPN anchor Robert Flores making fun of rapper Iggy Azalea, Young’s girlfriend. “We learned that, according to the Lakers’ Nick Young, a dolphin recently tried to kill him,” Flores said on ESPN. “So, Nick, while dolphins are trying to kill you, your girlfriend is trying to kill hip-hop. Let’s call it even, OK?”center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more
