NordicTracks VR fitness bike wore me out at CES

first_img Tags CES 2019 1:47 HTC Vive Pro Eye tracks your eyes with pinpoint accuracy,… Everything we learned at CES 2019: The executive summary for the entire show VR needs more Disney-style magic like The Void from CES 2019: How to get VR right Still, that’s pretty lofty, and not far from the all-in cost of a Peloton (mid-$2,000s). (Peloton also has a lower-cost subscription fitness app that works on its own, but it’s not as integrated a solution as the company’s customized bike.) NordicTrack’s VR bike has fans for creating a feeling of motion (and ventilation), and the handlebars double as a movable 8-axis yoke for extra flexibility, and are studded with all the necessary game controller-like buttons and triggers to play. It supports Bluetooth audio, connects to the iFit fitness platform, and has varying levels of resistance when biking. nordictrack-vr-bikeThe handlebars, display and fan system up close. Scott Stein/CNET The bike also has position-sensing pedals, according to NordicTrack, that can recognize 16 pedal positions and sync with games (stomping or back-pedaling, perhaps). There’s a built-in display, and the bike can adjust to 10 percent incline or decline to match elevation shifts in VR, too. Because, in VR, your exercise bike is often airborne. I am exhausted. #CES2019 pic.twitter.com/8r0ofDWX3S— Scott Stein (@jetscott) January 8, 2019 85 Photos Preview • HTC’s Vive Focus is the company’s new standalone VR headset NordicTrack I’ll never forget riding a flying horse in VR while pedaling a bicycle and nearly wanting to throw up. That happened years ago when I tried VirZoom, a low-cost stationary bike that worked with fitness games and both mobile and console VR headsets. VR and fitness biking can be a rough mix. NordicTrack aims to do Virzoom one better with a far fancier machine, the NordicTrack VR Bike, coming this summer. I got to play with it in Las Vegas during CES 2019. The bike works with HTC’s Vive Focus mobile VR headset, playing several VR games that will sync with the bike’s various motion-control features. The VR bike bundle will cost $1,999, which is a lot more expensive than VirZoom. But the NordicTrack VR Bike also has a lot more features than the pretty basic VirZoom ever had. It also comes with a Vive Focus headset (around $599) and a one-year iFit Personal Trainer subscription with workout programs ($396), so the bike only technically costs about $1,000. center_img Memories of #CES…my ride on the @NordicTrack VR Bike w @htcvive Vive Focus. Unflattering, but in VR I just see steampunk wonderlands. pic.twitter.com/i0Bm3elB3s— Scott Stein (@jetscott) January 14, 2019 2 Share your voice Comments The fitness game I tried, Aeronauts, is a steampunk sort of fly-through-the-rings race, much like some VirZoom games I played, or Nintendo’s Pilotwings. Pedaling faster made me get to the rings quicker. I often needed to steer the yoke to tilt up or down. Extra bonus targets are around to shoot (for those, I needed to stare at the drone-like things, lock in, and fire away with handlebar triggers). I got winded — and nauseous. Sure, I tried the bike after hours of back-to-back VR demos in Vegas, I wasn’t wearing proper workout clothes, and I was dehydrated — and also, I’m out of shape. It felt like a workout! But I think, for VR, I’d prefer a more grounded experience like Beat Saber instead. But I’m curious to give NordicTrack’s VR Bike another go when it arrives this summer. Firefox brings web VR content to Oculus Quest

first_img 0 Oculus Virtual Reality Firefox Facebook Post a comment Share your voice Mobile Virtual Reality Apps Mozilla’s Firefox Reality browser lets you watch video on VR headsets, including Facebook’s Oculus Quest. Mozilla Firefox Reality, Mozilla’s virtual reality browser, now supports Facebook’s Oculus Quest headset. It already worked with the HTC Vive Focus Plus, the Lenovo Mirage and some other VR headsets. But the $400 Oculus Quest, with no wires tethering your headset to a PC, is a new, high-profile option in the world of VR. My colleague Scott Stein says the Quest’s “full-motion untethered design feels like the future.””Firefox Reality takes advantage of the Oculus Quest’s boost in performance and capabilities to deliver the best VR web browsing experience,” Mozilla said in a blog post Thursday.VR browsers use VR-adapted web technology so developers can create 3D virtual realms that span multiple VR devices. That universality is potentially helpful for VR fans disappointed about how little there is to do with their specific headsets. For example, even games written for the wired Oculus Rift don’t automatically work on the Oculus Quest.Mozilla’s Firefox Reality browser lets VR headset owners see a VR version of the web. Mozilla The Oculus Quest is a big deal in the world of VR headsets, but that’s still a limited distinction because VR hasn’t caught on widely. In 2018, Microsoft scrapped plans for a VR headset for its Xbox game console. Another CNET colleague, Dan Ackerman, a VR “true believer,” has given up for now.Mozilla helped pioneer VR browser technology with its work on the initial WebVR standard for creating VR content, with its WebXR that embraces augmented reality too, and with its A-Frame programming framework that takes care of a lot of the heavy lifting for VR content creators. From IAS topper to being dubbed a state agent Will Shah Faesal

first_imgShah Faesal along with Shehla Rashid Shora, during the launch of his political party, J&K Peoples Movement in SrinagarTwitterLast week, when IAS officer-turned-politician Shah Faesal launched his party – J&K Peoples’ Movement -in Srinagar, many mainstream political parties, including National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party, had taken a dig at him calling him a state agent who wants to divide Kashmiris.J&K’s political history is witness to the fact of many attempts to snatch away its special status especially by the use of proxies by New Delhi. Today is no different. A party has been created/funded to divide us to make it easier for them AGAIN. Beware and be on guard! #OnlyHal— Tanvir Sadiq (@tanvirsadiq) March 17, 2019Faesal responded to his critiques saying that “those who were parading before him some months ago to join their outfits are suddenly calling him an agent.” He has promised to bring the winds of change to the valley through his party’s slogan “Hawa Badlegi”.Faesal reiterated that he would need public support in terms of votes and finance to run his party and has already started a crowdfunding campaign. A youth icon as many would call him due to his academic and professional record despite coming from a trouble-torn state has made many believe that he seems honest. Faesal and Shehla Rashid coming together have evoked interest on the national front too with many young political leaders such as Jignesh Mevnani and Kanhaiya Kumar congratulating the due for their debut.Dear @shahfaesal & @Shehla_Rashid: All the best for your political journey. I hope you & the J&K Peoples’ Movement help advance the cause of peace & development in our state. — Salman Anees Soz (@SalmanSoz) March 17, 2019 @shahfaesal and @Shehla_Rashid have launched a much needed political platform. Not only i wish them success but also appeal masses to support this effort. This country needs young minds who can catch people’s imagination with fresh ideas. Much power to you. U have shown guts.— Jignesh Mevani (@jigneshmevani80) March 18, 2019 More power to you @Shehla_Rashid and @shahfaesal Hoping that your initiative will provide a much needed political platform to the Young Minds and bring peace, growth and stability in the valley. — Kanhaiya Kumar (@kanhaiyakumar) March 17, 2019Shah Faesal – a welcome change in the traditional dynasty politics of J&KUnquestionably, J&K has been ruled by governments led by either the Abdullahs or the Muftis leaving little space for those with non-political backgrounds to make their mark.It is an open secret that anyone who joins either National Conference or Peoples Democratic Party remain subservient to Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar or late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti.  Shah Faesal/ FacebookEven as BJP made several attempts to hit at these party by referring to them as dynasts crushing internal democracy, the truth is that BJP holds no ground in J&K. Shah Faesal’s entry into politics is definitely a fresh change and may even lead to a change in the heart of voters who have had to choose between the Abdullahs and the Muftis. There is Sajad Lone too on the forefront of politics in the state, but considering his history of allegiance towards separatists and BJP, political commentators do not view him as a trendsetter like Faesal.Faesal has the capability of striking a chord with the youth of the state, who consider him as an icon and want to follow his footsteps. On his inaugral address during the launch of J&K Peoples’ Movement, the former IAS officer had specicifically mentioned how the youth in J&K have been subjected to various degress of atrocities ranging from custodial killings to pellet blindings. But Faesal has focussed on development and considers it as a way to bring J&K out of troubled times.last_img read more

Amazon Microsoft may be putting world at risk with killer AI says

first_imgCritics warned AI would jeopardise international security and herald a third revolution in warfare.Creative CommonsAmazon, Microsoft and Intel are among the leading technology companies putting the world at risk through killer robot development that could spearhead a global artificial intelligence (AI)-based arms race, according to a report.Dutch NGO Pax ranked 50 major players from the sector about their stance on lethal autonomous weapons. It ranked the companies according to three criteria: whether they were developing technology that could be relevant to killer robots, whether they were working on related military projects and if they had committed to abstaining from contributing in the future, an AFP report said. The use of AI to allow weapon systems to autonomously select and attack targets has sparked ethical debates in recent years, with critics warning they would jeopardise international security and herald a third revolution in warfare after gunpowder and the atomic bomb.”Why are companies like Microsoft and Amazon not denying that they’re currently developing these highly controversial weapons, which could decide to kill people without direct human involvement?” said Frank Slijper, lead author of the report.Google, which last year published guiding principles eschewing AI for use in weapons systems, was among seven companies found to be engaging in “best practice” in the analysis that spanned 12 countries, as was Japan’s Softbank, best known for its humanoid Pepper robot.Twenty-two companies were of “medium concern,” while 21 fell into a “high concern” category, notably Amazon and Microsoft who are both bidding for a $10 billion Pentagon contract to provide the cloud infrastructure for the US military.Scalable weapons of mass destruction”Autonomous weapons will inevitably become scalable weapons of mass destruction, because if the human is not in the loop, then a single person can launch a million weapons or a hundred million weapons,” Stuart Russell, a computer science professor at the University of California, Berkeley, told AFP.”The fact is that autonomous weapons are going to be developed by corporations, and in terms of a campaign to prevent autonomous weapons from becoming widespread, they can play a very big role,” added Russell.last_img read more
