Morrow County teens attend National Youth Summit on Agri-Science in Washington, D.C.

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest In order to continue to fuel the discovery of new solutions and solve big challenges in human health, agriculture and food, it will be critical to cultivate the next generation of leaders in science. Emma Burchett, Jacob Kirkland, Jacob Serio, and Lucy Smith recently got their chance to hone their agri-science skills at the National Youth Summit on Agri-Science in Washington, D.C.Amanda Forquer, OSU Extension 4-H Educator in Morrow County, escorted the youth to this four-day Summit which was held at the National 4-H Conference Center, in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Nearly 250 youth were immersed in an agenda focused on a variety of agri-science topics relevant to agriculture including: soil health, animal biosecurity, agribusiness, drones, honey bees, and precision farming.Attendees from across the country had the opportunity to build their science skills in more than 15 sessions led by a number of industry leaders and mentors.“Because of the attendees being from so many different states I really enjoyed the diversity of everyone’s ideas. With having different backgrounds people had multiple ways of solving the same problems,” Burchett said.Youth enjoyed the interactive sessions as they were easy to follow and most importantly easy to learn about science. One workshop paired eight youth with a scientist from Bayer. The scientist guided the students through a simulation of the process necessary to get the idea of a new product, to having it available to consumers.“I didn’t realize how much time and the amount of money that is involved with bringing a product to market,” Serio said. Two hours was dedicated to youth interacting directly with people working in the field of agriculture. This gave them the opportunity to learn how these successful professionals went from high school students to where they are today. They learned what schooling/training is needed, experience needed, how networking with professionals in the field is invaluable, and so much more.Throughout the conference our team of four had to develop a plan to solve a problem that they felt was happening within their community. The team created a presentation, Sparking Youth’s Interest in Agriculture, which would educate the community about 4-H and FFA which will result in them learning more about agriculture. The 2018 National Youth Summit on Agri-Science was sponsored by Bayer. Science matters, a nationwide collaboration between Bayer and National 4-H Council, leverages Bayer’s more than 150 years of scientific breakthroughs and 4-H’s century of hands-on learning to equip more than 25,000 youth with tools and support they need to deepen their understanding of science.last_img read more

New Designs Make Buildings More Bird-Friendly

first_imgAn architect at a New York-based firm is leading an effort to introduce new features into building façades that will reduce the number of bird strikes, a problem that kills an estimated 750 million birds every year.Guy Maxwell, a partner at Ennead Architects, is working with Audubon chapters, glass manufacturers, and others to study what architectural features successfully deter bird strikes, and introduce them into building designs, according to an article posted at Wired.Maxwell began the venture some 15 years ago after his firm designed the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History. As dramatic as it was, the giant glass building also proved deadly for birds that couldn’t tell it was there.Since then, Maxwell and his partners have created two research facilities where different building and glass features can be tested. Among other things, they’ve discovered that birds will not try to fly through vertical patterns less than 4 inches apart. The group has worked with glass manufacturers to produce ceramic patterns and UV coatings that let birds know the glass is a barrier to be avoided.Their research is on display at the Bridge for Laboratory Sciences at Vassar College. Vertical metal sunscreens and a special UV coating on glass manufactured by Arnold Glas, plus ceramic fritting in the glass, all are designed to keep birds from colliding with the building.Maxwell’s group has made progress, including the introduction of a pilot credit in the LEED certification program that rewards collision deterrence. But Maxwell would like to see more research, new legislation, and a wider appreciation among architects about what they can do.“I’m amazed that there are still many people who don’t realize the enormity of the problem,” Maxwell told Wired.last_img read more

How To Jailbreak iOS 6 On Your iPhone, iPad Or iPod Touch

first_imgAt last, the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 is here. That not only means that the iPhone 5, iPad Mini and fourth generation 10-inch iPad can be freed from Apple’s restrictions, but that it’s safe for hardcore jail breakers to upgrade older devices to iOS 6 as well. Starting Monday, iOS users can do a lot more with their devices.  Jailbreaking isn’t a difficult or highly technical process, but it does demand some caution. The evasi0n jailbreak tool comes with simple step-by-step instructions in its readme.txt file, but we thought a more thorough walk-through would be worthwhile, lest you accidentally delete your cherished, digitally-captured memories.  (See Also: Why iOS 6 Jailbreaking Is Popular Enough To Break Cydia)Note:The screenshots used in this tutorial were made on Mac OS X. For Windows and Linux, use the analogous options within iTunes.1. Getting Ready: Download Evasi0n And Back Up Your DeviceThe first thing you’ll need to do is download Evasi0n onto your computer. There are versions available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. Once it’s downloaded, unpack it, install it and open it.Before you do anything with Evasi0n, plug your iOS device into the computer via USB, and open iTunes so you can back it up.  When the device appears within iTunes, right-click it and choose “Back Up.”  In iTunes, you have the option to back up to your local hard drive or iCloud. For the sake of speed, backing things up locally is probably the better option. Make sure the “Encrypt backup” checkbox is unchecked.  7 Types of Video that will Make a Massive Impac… Finally, if you use a passcode to lock your device, go into iOS’s Settings and turn it off. It can apparently screw with the jailbreaking process. 4. Launch Evasi0n And Jailbreak Your Device Once everything is backed up and updated, launch evasi0n. Take a deep breath. Click “Jailbreak.”  Cydia is the jailbreak equivalent of Apple’s App Store. At first glance, Cydia app store is not quite as polished as Apple’s, but it doesn’t take long to find your way around. You’ll want to start by browsing through the “Featured” list and looking at the themes that are available. Cydia does a pretty good job of breaking things down into useful categories, and even provides a list of tools to start out with. There are a lot of apps, tweaks and design themes available in Cydia. It’s worth taking the time to scroll through each list, check out the descriptions and screen shots, and start installing things you think would be useful for you. When I first jailbroke my iPhone 4, I started small by adding a fifth icon to the dock, enabling app-renaming, making Sparrow my default email client and adding a new theme. There are plenty of Siri-related tweaks, which you can find by searching “Siri” within Cydia. Other popular enhancements include additions to Notification Center, Wi-Fi tethering, game emulators and a variety of lock-screen modifications. Most tweaks and apps are free, but a handful of them cost a few bucks. The tethering and hotspot apps tend to run $10-$20, but price tags that large are otherwise pretty rare in Cydia. Growing Phone Scams: 5 Tips To Avoid How to Write a Welcome Email to New Employees? john paul titlowcenter_img Related Posts If you’ve download apps directly to your device, you’ll want to transfer those purchases to iTunes first. Go to File -> Devices -> Transfer Purchases from [whatever your device is called]. This way, when you restore the device, you won’t lose anything. If any apps go missing, you can always restore them on the device later by going to the “Purchased” tab under “Updates” in the iTunes store. 2. Back Up Your Photos And VideosBacking up your device in iTunes does not include your photos and videos. Before proceeding with the jailbreak, import everything using iPhoto, Adobe Bridge or any other photo management software. If you don’t back up the photos and videos on your device, you will lose them forever – and be sad.3. Upgrade to iOS 6.1 (If You Haven’t Already)  If you haven’t upgraded to iOS 6.1 yet, this is when you’ll want to do so. Once everything is backed up, go to the device’s “Summary” tab in iTunes and click the “Update” button under the iOS version number.  At this point, you might want to do some leisurely reading or get back to work, because the jailbreak itself may take 15-30 minutes to complete.  After several minutes, evasi0n will ask you to go to wake up your iPad and tap the “Jailbreak” icon now installed on your home screen (alongside your existing apps). Do that. From there, evasi0n will inject the last of the jailbreak files onto your device and it will reboot itself. Unlike the older Absinthe A5 jailbreak, evasi0n will automatically restore your device from its backup, saving you the extra manual step. 5. India Today Woman Summit 2014: Heroines Forever

first_imgLaxmi says that the psychological and physical effects of an acid attack hits you like a ton of bricks. Her body felt like it was on fire and no help was forthcoming from bystanders. Her eyes were the only part of her face that was spared, because she reflexively put her arms up in front of her face when the acid splashed onto her. But she could not see and could only hear sounds of traffic zooming by as she lay helpless on the road. The real horror of her condition struck her after she was released from the hospital. Comments and barbs were commonplace. It was just one part of the misplaced backlash from relatives, friends and acquaintances. She did not let the negativity get her down and converted the barbs into positivity. She let herself be inspired by all the people who thought her life was over. She drew strength from the fact that each step of the way her parents were supporting her.In a society that values women for their appearance, the biggest struggle was accepting herself with her reconstructed face and let her beauty shine through. She stepped out of the house a full three years after her acid attack and would don burkhas to cover herself up. A process of self realisation led her to finally shed the burkha because she wanted the beauty of clothes she had tailored herself to shine through.Arunima Sinha, who was pushed out of a train for refusing to give in to the bullying of thieves, went on to become the first woman amputee to climb Mount Everest. She was stranded on the train track for seven hours, unable to push herself out of the way of oncoming trains. She finally gave in and broke down when a few rats nibbled on the bloodied remainder of her leg. But she didn’t give up and held on till the next morning when she was finally discovered by villagers and taken to the Bareilly district hospital.advertisementWhile Arunima was bedridden and unable to even sit up without assistance, she decided to take up a sport, a challenging one that would instil her lost sense of confidence. She wanted to give her family, who were shattered after her accident, a reason to smile again. She met opposition every step of the way. She was turned away by numerous trainers, who said she was crazy to even be attempting such an expedition. She had to come to terms with her disability and work around that, putting focus on her strong points learnt while she was a national level volleyball player. Finally, a mountaineer, who was awestruck by Arunima’s conviction agreed to train her. He did not have the heart to turn her away after she made the long journey to meet him. Her sherpa was simultaneously awed and exasperated by her doggedness. At every difficult step of the climb, he suggested they turn back, but Anurima refused each time. She ran out of oxygen but persevered on, believing that God would not let her down this time.Getting back one’s self-conviction after a soul-shattering experience is fraught with far more prejudice for women. Both Laxmi and Anurima were not cowed down by the immense odds they faced and the manifest burden of the accident they carried. Converting the horrific incidents in both their lives into empowering ideas helped them recover their sense of self and is a testimony to their strength.I could not bear to look at myself in the mirror one and a half months after the acid attack: LaxmiMy campaign song for Indian Idol is based on my experience: LaxmiA few miles from the summit, the road was strewn with bodies of climbers. There I made a vow to reach the top for them as well as for myself: Arunima.(On her live-in partner) We didn’t want to get married because everyone does it: Laxmi. If I turned back when I was so close, I would have been regretting it today: Arunima.last_img read more

The investigation has been in the works since at least the week before Thanksgiving.Representatives for both photographers objected to the allegations, and Weber denied them in a statement. The law firm that represents Testino “challenged the characters and credibility” of people who made complaints and said former employees were shocked.Publishing giant Condé Nast told the Times it will stop working with both Testino and Weber “for the foreseeable future” and announced a new code of conduct to protect models from sexual harassment. Saudi Arabia plans to build futuristic city for innovators

first_imgRIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia’s powerful crown prince on Tuesday announced plans to build a futuristic city run entirely on alternative sources of energy and said the ultraconservative kingdom must return to “moderate Islam.”The $500 billion “Neom” project , envisioned as a hub for technological innovation, will be funded by the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund, which the prince oversees, as well as the Saudi government and a range of private and international investors.“This place is not for conventional people or conventional companies,” Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told an audience of investors from around the world gathered in the capital, Riyadh, on Tuesday. “This will be a place for the dreamers of the world.”It’s the latest surprise move by Saudi Arabia, a country that for decades was characterized by slow, cautious reforms, bureaucratic red tape and promises that fell short of target. The kingdom was forced to spring into action nearly three years ago after global energy prices fell by more than half, threatening to deplete Saudi foreign reserves and spending power by 2020.Now, the kingdom is on a mission to build the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund to invest in projects like Neom. The aim is diversify revenue away from oil exports and create more jobs under a plan spearheaded by the crown prince known as Vision 2030 .No reform, however, was more disruptive to the old order than last month’s decision to lift the ban on women driving next summer. Saudi Arabia is also expected to bring back cinemas soon as it opens the ultraconservative country to more entertainment.Prince Mohammed defended these reforms at the conference on Tuesday, saying “we were not like this in the past.”“We want to go back to what we were: Moderate Islam,” the prince said during his rare public appearance. The heir to the throne said the kingdom will work to defeat extremist ideas and ensure that young Saudis live in harmony with the rest of the world. He was speaking on a panel that included business titans Stephen Schwarzman of U.S. private equity firm Blackstone and Masayoshi Son of Japan’s technology conglomerate SoftBank. As panelist after panelist lavished praise on the 32-year-old prince for his “passion,” ”vision” and “enthusiasm,” he interjected, saying: “I’m one of 20 million people. I am nothing without them.”For many middle and lower-income Saudi families, the prince’s reform blueprint is long overdue. Most Saudis hold jobs with the government, where wages for many can average just a few hundred dollars a month. Still, the public sector wage bill eats up about half of the government’s total expenditure. As part of Vision 2030, the government plans to trim the public sector workforce by about 20 per cent while ensuring there are enough jobs in the private sector to keep up with demand.Over the next decade, an estimated 5 million young Saudis will enter the workforce, creating an urgent need for rapid job creation.Projects like Neom are focused on creating some of those jobs. The independent economic zone in the northwestern region of the country, near Egypt and Jordan, sits on 26,500 square kilometres (10,230 square miles) of untouched land along the Red Sea.The crown prince envisions it as a hub for innovation, where scientists would develop new technologies and investors would make healthy returns. It’s a place, he said, where drones, driverless cars and robotics might all work together to ensure there’s no traffic, for example.Prince Mohammed chose to unveil the project at the Future Investment Initiative conference being organized by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. The kingdom plans to transform the fund into the world’s largest by listing less than 5 per cent of state-owned oil giant Aramco on the Saudi stock exchange and an international exchange, and transferring ownership of Aramco to the Public Investment Fund, also known as PIF.Saudi Arabia says this could put some $2 trillion under PIF’s control— double that of Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, which is currently the world’s largest.Speaking to Bloomberg TV on the sidelines of the conference, PIF Managing Director Yasir al-Rumayyan said the fund currently manages about $230 billion in assets.Recently, reports emerged that Saudi Arabia was considering holding off on the international portion of the Aramco IPO in favour of a private offering from a key investor like China. Saudi officials, however, insist Aramco is on track for listings as early as next year.Al-Rumayyan, who is also on the board of Aramco, addressed those concerns at the forum in Riyadh, saying: “Everything is on track, 2018 is our target.”___Batrawy reported from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.last_img read more
