In the first innings, Dhawan was out for a golden duck while Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane also failed to spend any time in the middle. However, the likes of Murali Vijay, Virat Kohli, KL Rahil, Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya got valuable practice and made half-centuries. Rishabh Pant, the second wicketkeeper in the squad, also played a cameo down the order.India were bowled out for 395 before Essex mounted a spirited reply, declaring at 359/8. Apart from Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma, the other bowlers did not find any kind of rhythm. Mohammed Shami, who was ruled out of the Afghanistan Test after failing the Yo-Yo test, bowled 21 overs without picking up a wicket.1 Bravo, @Quinny_Cricket!…Dhawan goes for 0. #ESSvIND pic.twitter.com/qi2Ba35x3fEssex Cricket (@EssexCricket) July 27, 2018Dhawan, who had scored a century against Afghanistan in the one-off Test last month, has not yet played a significant innings in England. His twin failures in the warm-up match might make Rahul’s case to partner Vijay at the top of the order stronger.Dhawan had played three Tests in 2014 and managed only 122 runs. Therefore, it was important for him to spend some time in the middle before the first Test begins in Birmingham next week.advertisementlast_img read more
