LA MIRADA — – A few pennies can go a long way –as far away as Iraq, in the case of Pennies for Postage, a program that helps cover the cost of mailing care packages to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. “It’s our way of letting the boys and girls over there know that people at home care for them,” said Millie Lucker, a volunteer working on the project at the La Mirada Volunteer Center. The center is collaborating on the project with Packages of Gratitude, an Anaheim Hills nonprofit group that last year began collecting care package items and shipping them to military men and women overseas. Lucker and the other volunteers receive donations of bags of coins, or just loose coins, which are used to cover the $7.70 in postage needed to send one 7-pound care box. The boxes can include such items as Vienna sausages, packets of sunflower seeds, instant oatmeal, trail mix and packages of cheese and crackers and peanuts. Also, relatives of service men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan can add their names to the list of care-package recipients at the volunteer center, said Lucker. Mary Ann Cordova of Anaheim Hills started Packages of Gratitude last year, after visiting Washington, D.C., and viewing memorials to soldiers killed in Iraq. Getting help from the La Mirada center’s volunteers will help her efforts, she said. “I have probably sent 1,120 packages so far. Now I will be able to send a lot more,” she said. “Every package I send has a letter from me saying who helped out. Now the La Mirada Volunteer Center will be in that letter.” — Debbie Pfeiffer Trunnell can be reached at (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3028, or by e-mail at [email protected] 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
